What Rug Styles Can Say About You

What Rug Styles Can Say About You

Ever since “The Dude” emphasized how much the rug “tied the room together” in The Big Lebowski, it’s been apparent how true that statement really is. So much so that we’d say that a carefully chosen rug is the most important decorative item in any given room. A rug truly can tie the room together, and a rug can single-handedly defines what story the room is going to tell.

If you’re looking for a new rug you need to ask yourself, what story are you trying to tell? Dig deep into who you are and find out what different styles of rugs can say about you.

Moroccan style rugs are generally neutral in color with thin dark lines in a variety of patterns—some in the shape of diamonds, and others in plus signs or stripes. Some Moroccan rugs even have beads or tassels on the ends. Moroccan style rugs are minimalist, bohemian, and perfect for the wellness-obsessed.

If you want your home to bring you into a relaxed state of mind, then a Moroccan rug is the right rug for you.

Moroccan style rugs create a calm environment that encourages meditation or yoga practice. These rugs invite you to simply settle in with a cup of matcha tea.

Moroccan style rugs look great with light wood furniture, like teak wood. Consider pairing yours with terracotta pots and cacti or a majesty palm. For a pop of color, add a pouf with a warm-colored pattern. Don’t forget to add some neutral patterned throw pillows and a bamboo coffee table to boot!

Natural Fiber Rugs Say “I’d Rather Be Outside”

If you find yourself leaning toward rustic wood furniture and wicker baskets, then a natural fiber rug like jute, hemp, bamboo, or seagrass will fit right into your home aesthetic.

If that’s your style, you’re likely the outdoorsy type. If you can’t be outdoors, your indoors needs to feel natural. Most likely, your home is filled with plants in baskets, hanging terrariums, and your coffee table is piled with books on world travel. Your décor is cultural and keeps the mind intrigued.

You prefer simplicity, so you don’t need a rug with a pattern. Natural fiber rugs create a rugged environment that fits right in with your style. The key with natural fiber rugs is to make the rest of the décor intentional and balanced so that a plain, neutral rug won’t look boring. You’ll likely have enough plants and unique art pieces so that a colorful rug would be way too much. Add some beautiful natural fiber poufs around the outer edges of your rug too!

Floral Rugs Say “I’m The Hostess”

Floral rugs have more color and pattern than most other rugs, and they typically draw the eye of the extrovert. If you love floral rugs, then you are probably always planning your next cocktail party.

With intentional pops of color, your home can become vibrant and inviting. With a colorful rug, you prefer to keep the furniture bright and light. This means adding something like a neutral white or cream sofa with a glass coffee table.

Floral rugs come in a variety of colors so it can be difficult to choose which is right for you. If your walls and décor are darker, then a floral pattern set on a brown or navy background will look elegant. If you have white-painted walls and lots of natural light, then consider choosing a white or cream rug with pastel floral print.

Southwestern rugs create a mood of coziness and comfort. If you love Southwestern patterns, adobe décor, and rich wood textures, then a Southwestern rug with reds, browns, gold, or salmon hues is just what you need to tie your room together.

Your Southwestern rug fits comfortably by the fireplace, and you love to curl up with a good book and bourbon.

This room will look even warmer with a dark brown faux fur blanket, a deep leather couch, and a tall, gold lamp. As long as it’s done tastefully, more is less in this environment. A chest with straps and buckles is a great addition for storage space, a tall shelf with books and board games will fit right in, and be sure to add plenty of candles that make a statement. For the complete Southwestern feel, light some palo santo wood, and you’ll feel right at home.

Whether it’s Paris, London, or New York City, let’s face it—you’d rather be in a big city. If you love shag rugs, you likely love silver or mirror accents, and your picture frames are solid black. You’re modern, chic, and sophisticated. You have a large glass vase with hydrangeas, and you love plush pillows and white faux fur throw blankets. Your shag rug is preferably white or off-white, maybe even a soft grey. You have velvet curtains and lavender in your diffuser. Your coffee table books are about Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel. You keep your white shag rug clean because you prefer hosting cocktail parties in heels to than lounging on the floor. Besides, if you were to accidentally spill, you’re drinking champagne. You probably complete your room with a large piece of modern artwork. In the room next door, a matching shag rug lies under the glass dining room table.

Buying the perfect rug is a big decision, but remember to choose one that fits the persona of the story you wish to tell.
