Your bedroom should be your favorite room in the house, or at least the most comfortable, but as we go through the motions of day-to-day life, the bedroom often gets overlooked. Use this list to evaluate whether your bedroom is at maximum comfort or whether it could use a room refresh. Use these 9 tips to create the cozy bedroom oasis you have always dreamed of.
Whether it’s the bedroom textiles or a few small, key furniture pieces to complete the room, chances are that you are very close to having the bedroom of your dreams, so to speak. Making your bedroom cozier is a choice that you will never regret. A new headboard or a throw at the foot of the bed can tip the scales to make the room as cozy as possible. When you are finished, your bedroom will be lovely.
A Bedroom Rug
An area rug is useful in any room of the house, but it is especially luxurious in the bedroom. Your bedroom floor is the first thing that you touch when starting your day. A rug allows you to surround yourself with warmth and comfort as you transition into your day. Start your day off right with a beautiful and soft bedroom rug. The rug pictured above is part of the Metro collection by Dynamic Rugs, and we think it works wonderfully in this bedroom.
Bedroom rugs can be more forgiving and flexible than living room rugs because they don’t have to handle the same volume of foot traffic or high potential for food spills. This means you can choose a rug for your bedroom with maximum softness in mind. Choose a beautiful, plush bedroom rug that offers nothing but softness underfoot.
Maybe this is already implied in the section above, but we think it’s worth mentioning: a rug pad can make all the difference. The comfort of a rug is only enhanced by its rug pad. If you want the coziest rug possible, then you want to invest in the correct padding to go underneath.
Comfort is not the sole reason to pair your rug with a rug pad. A rug pad can actually lengthen the life of your bedroom rug by protecting the rug construction from the hard floor (as well as protect your home’s flooring from damage from a sliding rug). Select your rug pad based on the type of existing flooring in your bedroom and whether you plan on placing any large furniture on the rug, as some pads can help reduce puckering under the weight of heavy furniture.
Throw pillows can breathe new life into a room and transform your bed from boring to beautiful. A relatively small expense, these pillows and textiles can easily be swapped out depending on mood or season. On a bed, they are also functional, too. They can make sitting up on the bed more comfortable. A symmetrical arrangement in a cohesive color pattern will make your space look inviting and clean. Look for the softest pillows possible to ensure that your bed is always looking inviting and cozy. There’s no need to try to incorporate excessive beadwork or coarse fabric pillows onto a bed. Instead, aim for something that is restful and relaxing to the touch.
There is nothing cozier in a bedroom than a duvet. For maximum comfort, consider ditching the movement restricting top sheet of your bed and instead use a soft, washable duvet cover. The cover is easily removed and washed in place of the top sheet and can be switched out with the season, which makes it more functional than the traditional top sheet. Leave the cover empty for the hot summer months and fill it with light, medium, or heavy weight down or down alternative duvet inserts as the weather cools.
Blankets and Throws
Throws and blankets are another easy way to add comfort to a bedroom. Perfect for when you wake up a little chilly in the middle of the night or your partner hogs the duvet, throws are very cozy. Try to find throws and blankets that are wider than your bed, if possible, for maximum coziness. Folding them across the foot of the bed adds visual interest as well as a depth of textile that the duvet cannot do alone. Throws and pillows can easily be swapped out with the season. Throws and blankets can really tie in the different elements in your bedroom and create a more cohesive overall look.
Throws are very versatile and an excellent styling tool for your bedroom. You can use them over the headboard as a headboard throw or layer across the foot of the bed to add warmth and a pop of color. All bedrooms have a plan for storing clean clothes. Having a system in place for dirty clothes and for clean clothes that are waiting to be put away can really add to the overall comfort of your bedroom.
For dirty clothes use a beautiful and functional hamper for stowing away dirty clothes out of sight. Make sure your hamper allows for air ventilation while still looking beautiful on the outside. It’s just a gross fact of life: moisture in clothing is inevitable, and you do not want a mildew factory in your bedroom!
Use a clothes tree for hanging those clothing items that you pulled out of the closet but changed your mind about at the last minute. That way they don’t end up falling onto the floor and needing to be washed when they haven’t even been worn yet.
Bedroom lighting can completely set the mood, whether you are wanting something more romantic or just some soft light for reading at the end of the day. A cozy bedroom has lighting available at your fingertips in logical places, like a bedside table. We recommend a pair of small table lamps that you can reach from the bed and an eye-catching pendant light with a dimmer switch to complete your bedroom sanctuary. Depending on the size and layout of a room, additional table lamps may be necessary to go on top of dressers. Floor lamps are also a good option if you don’t plan to use the overhead light much.
Headboards create a great focal point and add a nice “finishing touch” to a bedroom. They also prevent marks on the wall. But more than just being functional, if you have ever used a bed without a headboard, then you understand how much comfort a headboard can add to the bedroom. While they visually anchor the bed to the wall, they also add comfort and back support while sitting up in bed. They also hold pillows in place, and some even provide storage. The headboard above is available in nine different colors so it can be customized to your style to make your space more comfortable.
Even a small bedroom needs some seating options. Not every bedroom has a lot of room for seating, but a bench at the foot of the bed provides a place to put on and take off shoes without taking much floor space. A bench at the foot of the bed can be luxurious, and a storage bench can hold extra throw pillows or blankets.
A pair of chairs is another commonly found seating option. They can also be placed at the foot of the bed or moved to an open corner.
